Daisetsuzan National Park has many day hike options to suit many levels of hiking skill and fitness.

Even on day hikes you should never underestimate Daisetsuzan the conditions.
Even on a find day thing can change fast.

Every year Daisetsuzan claims on average 5 lives a year and many of them are day hikes.
Usually the problem is something happens to them like getting injured or lost and they have to send the night out in the open.

What I recommend you should take:
  • Rain jacket and rain pants
  • Extra water & snacks
  • Good map & compass
  • Extra warm clothes
  • Woolen hat
  • Sun hat
  • Good hiking boots (Many trails a rocky or muddy so boots are much better than hiking shoes up there)
  • Emergency survival blanket
  • Whistle
  • your cell phone (if you have one)
  • first aid kit
  • repair kit

Good thing to do:
  • If you are staying at any of the accommodation around the park and will return. Make sure you tell them where you are going and what time you think you will return.
  • Every hike has a book you have to fill out at the starting point of the hike you are doing.
It is always a good idea to fill the out but the only problem is the questions are in Japanese. Not worry. In the spaces just write your full name. how people in your party and their names, ages, where you are going, what time your left and a cell number if you have one. You can write this in English. It is better than nothing.
If something happens to you. There is some info to help them.
Note: for many years I have been trying to get the park to have English question sheets but without any luck.
  • If you have a water filter. It is a good idea to take it eve on a day hike and especially a long day hike. If you run out of water, you can fill up.
